![]() The Apple Arcade deadline pushed the development team to tie up loose ends and finish the game. Designed in Unity, the team ensured the game was compatible on a variety of platforms from the get go. The team "dusted off" the project and continued working on it for a 2 years before release. The original development of Tangle Tower was put on hold after Nintendo approached SFB Games to make Snipperclips, but resumed after the game's expansion, Snipperclips Plus, was completed. Development Īfter Detective Grimoire had been completed in 2014 with a light cliff-hanger ending, the team didn't have an immediate rush to do a sequel however they soon learnt about the Creative Europe’s funding programme which offered funding for narrative driven games, leading to SFB formulating a sequel they entered into in programme in January 2015. When certain conditions are met, the player can question each suspect about something they're hiding. Searching the environment will often unveil puzzles that must be solved in order to obtain a new piece of evidence. Players progress through the game by conversing with the various suspects and searching each room of the tower for clues. ![]() The game follows Detective Grimoire and his assistant Sally (who appeared in the previous game with a different hairstyle) as they travel to the eponymous Tangle Tower to solve the murder of a girl named Freya Fellow, who was seemingly killed by a painting. The game was launched with the Apple Arcade service on 19 September 2019 and was later released for Nintendo Switch and Steam on 22 October 2019, followed by PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on 6 October 2021. It is a sequel to the 2014 game Detective Grimoire and the third entry in the Detective Grimoire series. Tangle Tower (also known as Detective Grimoire: Tangle Tower) is a murder mystery point-and-click adventure game developed and published by SFB Games. That's not enough for me to be able to recommend this game as a game, though.Apple Arcade, macOS, Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One And the writing is also great except that the murder mystery part of it doesn't make a ton of sense. I will say that the art, world-building, and voice acting are top notch. So as an interview/point-and-click game, it's again very unsatisfying. The game has several of these, which force you to show arbitrary items to arbitrary characters to make progress. Several of them know what type of lens it is, but only one of them triggers the dialogue option. And yet, when one character calls it a microscopic lens, you can't challenge them on it until you show it to one specific other character first. If you've ever encountered a telescope or spyglass at any time in your life, you know what a telescopic lens looks like. For instance, one of the clues you find is a telescopic lens. Some of these are frustrating because they're gated behind certain other conversation options. The bulk of the gameplay consists of talking to the suspects about each other and about the clues you find. So as a puzzle game, it's also very unsatisfying. And if you're a fan of puzzle games, you won't find them remotely challenging. ![]() You'll spend only a very small amount of your playtime on them. The reviews of this game frame it as a puzzle game, but there are only about half a dozen puzzles in the game. So as a murder mystery, it's very unsatisfying. Motive is never even touched on until the end, and it has to be spoon-fed to you because there aren't any clues at all. You never establish opportunity: one suspect lies about their alibi and you never prove otherwise. You spend most of the game on the first of these. ![]() There are three key components to a murder mystery: means, motive, and opportunity.
